FAQs

An HSE Management System, or Health, Safety and Environment Management System, is a comprehensive approach to managing health and safety risks in the workplace. It’s designed to prevent work-related injury and ill health, improve safety performance, and ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation.
ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. Implementing an ISO 45001-compliant HSE Management System can help your business reduce workplace accidents and illness, lower costs associated with incidents, demonstrate compliance to stakeholders, and strengthen your reputation for safety and responsibility.
The PDCA process is a continuous loop of planning, doing, checking, and acting that’s used to achieve continuous improvement in HSE Management. ‘Plan’ involves identifying hazards and assessing risks, ‘Do’ involves implementing controls, ‘Check’ involves monitoring and measuring performance, and ‘Act’ involves taking corrective action where necessary and continually improving health and safety performance
With our services, you can expect end-to-end support throughout the implementation of your HSE Management System. This includes assistance with planning, risk and opportunity management, objective setting, implementation, performance evaluation, and continuous improvement. Our team of chartered consultants and ISO Lead Auditors will be with you every step of the way.
ISO 18001, also known as OHSAS 18001, was the previous standard for occupational health and safety management systems. Introduced in 2007, it helped organisations to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions.

ISO 45001, introduced in 2018, is the new international standard that replaces OHSAS 18001. It follows the common structure of other ISO standards, making integration easier. It places a stronger emphasis on the context of an organisation and requires greater involvement from leadership. Additionally, ISO 45001 focuses on risk management and worker participation more than ISO 18001.

Implementing ISO 45001 in the workplace involves several steps:

  1. Understanding OSH Management Systems and ISO 45001: Before implementing ISO 45001, familiarise yourself with the requirements of an Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) management system and the ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ cycle which forms the basis of the standard.
  2. Examining Your Current System: Review your current health and safety practices and identify any gaps compared to the requirements of ISO 45001.
  3. Engaging Stakeholders: Involve all stakeholders, especially top management, as their support and commitment are crucial for successful implementation.
  4. Determining Priorities and Establishing Goals: Set clear goals for your OSH management system that align with your organisational objectives.
  5. Planning and Implementing: Develop a plan to meet your goals and implement it. This includes setting up processes to identify hazards, assess risks and opportunities, and establish operational controls.
  6. Checking Performance: Monitor and measure your performance against the OSH policy and objectives. This includes conducting internal audits and management reviews.
  7. Addressing Risks and Opportunities: Take action to address any risks and opportunities identified during the ‘Check’ phase.
  8. Continual Improvement: ISO 45001 requires organisations to continually improve their OSH management systems. This involves regularly reviewing and updating the system, and addressing nonconformities and corrective actions.

In ISO 45001, leadership plays a crucial role. The standard requires top management to demonstrate leadership and commitment to the occupational health and safety management system. This includes taking accountability for the effectiveness of the system, ensuring that the health and safety policy and related objectives are established and are compatible with the strategic direction of the organization, integrating health and safety into the organization’s business processes, and promoting continual improvement.
